The Pig'n Whistle restaurant chain began life in California around 1908. It eventually grew to over 20 stores with outlets up and down the West Coast. Original artwork decorated the walls of the restaurants and special attention was made to catering for children with special menus and books. The chain expanded into in-flight catering providing meals for Transcontinental Western Air flights out of Los Angeles and San Francisco. The 1950s began a period of decline and entrenchment and by 1968 there were only three Pig'n Whistle restaurants left. The cover art from this 1919 menu was J. Duncan Gleason, born in California 1881 he was a known for his marine and seascape themes featuring the Californian coast. He also worked for the art departments of MGM and Warner Brothers. J. Duncan Gleason died in 1959.
