Product Description

This image of a host of little angels helping a showgirl get dressed was the front cover of a 1945 menu at a famous American nightclub called Versailles. The cherubs checked her hair, her outfit and helped her with her stockings.

Versailles nightclub was located in midtown New York City and started life in the 1920s as an opera house. After it became a nightclub, it was famous for its continental revues performed three times every evening by showgirls.

There was also a nightly cabaret and among the singers who appeared there was the famous French chanteuse Edith Piaf, famous for songs such as Non, Je ne regrette rien and La Vie en Rose.

Dinner was served every night and customers could also have their fortunes told by palmists Doris or Annabelle.

We think Versailles, named after the principal royal residence of France until the Revolution in 1789, closed in the late 1950s.
