The Raft, Balboa Island 1950s
Product Description
The Raft was a popular restaurant on Balboa Island, California, in the 1940s.
Past celebrity residents of this year-round playground included James Cagney, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne and perhaps they stopped in for ‘milkshakes so thick you have to eat them with a spoon’ or coffee and Cokes for 10c.
This menu featured an illustration of a wooden raft and on the rear a map of Balboa Island by commercial illustrator and master mapmaker Claude G. Putnam (1884-1955.)
Although he lived in Glendale, California, Putnam was an avid yachtsman and spent his spare time on the island where he was the senior staff commodore of the Newport Harbor Club.
The Raft, at 211 Marine Avenue, closed in the 1950s.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
All printed in USA.
