Hotel Caleta, Acapulco 1950s
Product Description
This colorful and witty drinks menu was from the Caleta, one of the first of the grand old hotels in Acapulco, the beach resort town along Mexico's Pacific coast.
It dates to the mid to late 50s when Acapulco was a glamorous tourist resort, patronized by the jet set. Wealthy travelers and movie stars such as Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly would vacation here. President John F Kennedy and his wife Jackie had a two-week honeymoon here in 1953.
Then, as now, the location is popular with snorkelers and divers, and this illustration shows a lucky diver finding a mermaid in his glass. Playas Caleta and Caletilla are two small, protected beaches blending into each other in a cove on the south side of the Península de las Playas.
The Caleta opened in the 1930s in the old part of Acapulco, where the resort sprang from. It was extended into a 241-room hotel and is still in operation today and popular with Mexican holidaymakers.
The interior illustration is just as colorful and imaginative, showing the range of drinks on offer in the hotel bar, an enthusiastic barman and a customer who seemed to be overwhelmed by the choice of cocktails.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
