Eating Chinese food was still quite an adventurous thing to do in the 1940s which is why the Shangri-La in Phildelphia advertised itself as a Chinese-American restaurant. This was to let customers know that both Chinese and American food was being offered. If you didn't want to try a Subgum Chicken Wormein, you could always have an oyster stew or an omelette. Chinese teas were offered but the cocktail and wine list was extensive and we suspect most people chose the alcoholic option. The restaurant was on Market Street and its telephone number was listed as Locust – 9870.
