Victor Nathaniel Chevalley Garland was born in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, in 1905 and had some success as an actor. He appeared in Marooned (1933) Tiger Bay (1934) and Mademoiselle Josette, ma Femme (1933) .

His films – some of which were made by the British Lion Film Corporation – often had the theme of a young Englishman abroad, getting into romantic scrapes and battling racketeers.

Perhaps this prompted Victor Garland – he shortened his name – to open the nightclub Club Havana on the Rue del la Liberte in Nice, France.

The bar and restaurant became a stopping point for Americans and Brits on the French Riviera. Food doesn’t seem to have been the priority here – among the dishes that were served was ham and eggs.

So we're guessing this place was famous for its live music, dancing and booze. On the interior menu, you will find a Havana Club kicker or ‘zombie’ cocktail – with the warning ‘only one to a customer.’
