This delightful image of a United Airlines plane soaring over the Chicago skyline and waterfront was on the front cover of a first-class menu in the 1990s.

It includes a depiction of the former John Hancock Center, the 100-story supertall skyscraper located in the Magnificent Mile district.

When the building topped out in 1968, it was the second-tallest building in the world after the Empire State Building in New York City and the tallest in Chicago. It is now the fifth tallest building in Chicago and is now known simply as 875 North Michigan Avenue.

The image was commissioned to celebrate the airline’s sponsorship of the Taste of Chicago promotion, with food on board designed by local restaurants.

Passenger response was so positive that the food from many Windy City restaurants was served on domestic flights to and from Chicago and 46 US cities over several years of airline sponsorship.

Taste fare also made its way onto the airline’s international flights to Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Paris, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, German, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

United Airlines was founded in 1926 as Varney Airlines and became the world’s third largest airline after a merger with continental Airlines in 2010.

United was the last of all legacy airlines to operate its own kitchens until 2021. After the kitchens closed, United outsourced all its catering needs.
