TMV Willem Ruys, Royal Rotterdam Lloyd 1962
Product Description
This delightful illustration of a multi-deck ship with crew members keeping watch while passengers enjoy life at sea won first prize in a 1960 competition held by the Dutch shipping line Royal Rotterdam Lloyd.
The artist was 20-year-old Malcolm Sylvester Binding and his cheerful and colorful creation was used on menu covers aboard the cruise ship Willem Ruys that sailed on various routes to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand and to New York and Canada.
The stylish liner was a much-loved Dutch ship, famous for its elegant cabins, ample deck spaces and lavish public spaces. Named after the founder of the shipping line, she was sold in 1965 to an Italian shipping line and eventually became the Achille Lauro.
Royal Rotterdam Lloyd was established in Amsterdam in 1883 and lasted until 1970 when it merged with other Dutch shipping companies.
Mr Binding, who is now 84, lives with his family in Sweden.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
