The Harbor, Santa Barbara 1940s

The Harbor restaurant on historic Stearns Wharf has a long and fascinating history dating back to 1926 when it was originally the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. In 1941, it was purchased by local Democratic Senator Alvin Weingand and the suave British-American movie star Ronald Coleman and converted into a restaurant. The duo already owned the San Ysidro Ranch, which had been purchased in the 1930s and made into an exclusive resort for Hollywood celebrities and dignitaries such as Britain’s wartime prime minister Winston Churchill. By the 1960s, the restaurant was in the hands of the Castagnola family, but a fire destroyed the restaurant and part of the wharf in 1973, and the historic pier was closed for about six years.
After being rebuilt, the Harbor was owned first by the Williams family and then by local businessman John Scott from 1981 to 2022. Now this iconic spot is owned by couples John Thyne and Olesya Thyne and Gene Sanchez and Carolina Jimenez. ‘Walking into the recently revamped, reconsidered, rejuvenated Harbor Restaurant, it sort of feels like you’ve entered the dining room of a Viking cruise ship. Perched on Stearns Wharf, you are as much on the water as any building can be. The wide expanse of windows offers you a full view of the marina, the slope of the Mesa, and, as the evening extends, a sunset view, given which way west points on our edge of the Pacific,’ says a 2024 review from the Santa Barbara Independent, pointing out that every table in the dining room has a view of the ocean.
The 12,850-square-foot establishment is on two floors and can seat 500 guests. This lovely menu image shows the Harbor restaurant and its lovely ocean-front setting and – from the prices – is probably dated sometime in the 1940s.
