The Cloud Room, Portland 1940s
Product Description
Where can you eat dinner, drink cocktails and hear heavenly jazz music? In The Cloud Room.
This 1940s menu cover is for The Cloud Room restaurant and bar in Portland, Oregon. At the time the Rose City was jammed with workers from all over America, pitching in for the WWII war effort – working on the docks or in factories building planes and aircraft parts.
The inventive front cover shows a musician playing a double bass while beautiful women dance above him on a bed of clouds. There’s also a flying dog in there – perhaps it belonged to the owner of the establishment – and a flagon of wine with wings.
There was another famous Cloud Room restaurant and bar in Seattle that specialized in Dixieland Jazz and it may be that this establishment was an offshoot – or a tribute – to that one.
The artist who created this inventive and imaginative vintage menu cover obviously had his head in the clouds – in a good way.
