Shadows, San Francisco 1940s
Product Description
The Shadows opened in 1932 on Telegraph Hill, then a bohemian area full of artists and poets who wanted to turn the neighborhood into a San Francisco version of Paris’s Montmartre - hence this cover illustration of an artist and his muse and dancing and merriment downstairs.
As you can see from the menu, the food offering was a mixture of German/Swiss influenced fine dining.
It was owned by the Pollack family, also owners of Julius Castle down the street from The Shadows, as well as Tommy’s Joynt.
Later in its life, The Shadows was popular with families. On the third floor, it had sweeping views of the Bay.
The Shadows lasted until the 1980s – at one point the building became an Italian restaurant. We believe it is now a private residence.
