The Sacramento Inn opened in 1957 on a 20-acre property and was described at the time as being’ ultra-modern in design ‘with the bedrooms and public areas grouped around a central garden court that had a heating swimming pool.
The number of rooms grew to 300 and the dining room could seat 400. There was a cocktail lounge with a long serpentine-style bar, two dance floors and a restaurant and coffee shop under the direction of Karl Johannsen, formerly of Chasen’s in Hollywood.
The owner was Elwood Maleville and he and his brothers John and Edwin also owned the highly popular Coral Reef restaurant (a bustling supper club and famous for its paper-wrapped chicken) and the Coral Reef Lodge and other businesses in Sacramento.
Among the celebrity guests who stayed at the Sacramento Inn were Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Sammy Davis Jnr and The Supremes.
The inn was sold in 1976, and it became the Red Lion Inn. It is now closed.
This fish-themed menu is a great example of mid-century design, simple and striking.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
