In the 1960s traveling from Sydney, Australia, to London, England, took roughly 30 to 35 hours of total flight time. However, the entire journey often spanned two to three days.

Because early jetliners, such as Boeing 707s, could not make the 11,000-mile journey in one stretch, the historic Kangaroo Route - operated by what was then called Qantas Empire Airways Limited - featured multiple stopovers for refueling and maintenance.

There was no in-flight entertainment on board these long flights, of course, and amenities were essential for keeping passengers happy. Alcohol and soft drinks were available and chess boards, draughts boards, playing cards and crossword puzzles were offered for passengers’ amusement.

There was a library of books and magazines to peruse and Aerograms, a lightweight, self-contained letter sheet that folded into its own envelope for airmail correspondence, and Airmail writing paper for longer letters were available. Toiletries were also provided.

QEA had a ‘no tipping’ policy on board. ‘Offering a tip will only cause embarrassment,’ this menu says, referring to Qantas personnel.’ Their reward is the knowledge that they have helped to make your flight more enjoyable.’

The flag carrier of Australia and the only airline in the world to fly to all seven continents, Qantas was founded in 1920 as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.

In 1967, the airline dropped the word ‘Empire’ from its name.

This stylish - mid-century designed menu featured a flight steward and flight hostess in smart uniforms, ready to serve passengers, and is dated 1962.
