A gentleman like me or you dines at Pigall’s…. says this wonderful restaurant advertising card from Paris in 1921. In this post-war era - France, Britain and Germany had signed an armistice to end the First World War- Americans flooded into Paris. Drawn by the falling franc and the free-flowing booze –Prohibition was in full force in the US – the rich and the carefree enjoyed a joyous, Bohemian post-war lifestyle. Ernest Hemingway, Man Ray, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Helena Rubenstein were among those who frequented the City of Light’s brasseries, bars and nightclubs. This advertisement was to attract Americans to Pigall’s – a restaurant and nightclub decorated rococo-style – all flamboyant paintings, mirrors and marble columns - on the first floor of Rue Pigalle in a popular neighborhood for nightlife. Champagne flowed, and people danced and gossiped till the wee hours.
This elegant ambassador for Pigall’s is in full evening dress with spats and top hat, grasping a rose between his teeth.
