The illustrations on Pan Am inflight menus traditionally featured aircraft in flight or artists’ impressions of the exotic destinations that awaited passengers when they landed.

This unusual inflight menu cover featuring a simple numbered font was specifically designed to be stylish and modern, showing passengers that a new era in mass air travel had arrived.

Even the airline’s ‘meatball’ logo was in its simplest form – without the Pan Am name.

The first 747s revolutionized air travel and ushered in an age of mass tourism. It could carry 366-452

passengers and had a maximum range of 6,100 miles.

The first Pan Am 747 flight from New York to London took place on January 22nd 1970.

This inflight menu cover was for a trip from New York to Paris and the passenger noted that the flying time was six hours and 45 minutes.

Pan Am was founded in Key West in 1927 and for most of the 20th century was the principal and largest

international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States.

 It was the first airline to fly worldwide and pioneered numerous innovations of the modern airline industry, such as jumbo jets and computerized reservation systems.

 Until its dissolution on December 4, 1991, Pan Am ‘epitomized the luxury and glamour of intercontinental travel.’

 Manufactured by Boeing for 54 years, the final 747 was delivered in January 2023.
