Nate's Deli, "Mr Corned Beef of Palm Springs" 1950s
Product Description
Established in 1948 in downtown Palm Springs, California, Mister Corned Beef was a traditional Jewish deli serving peppery pastrami, chewy corned beef and ‘borscht on the rocks.’
Located near the Chi Chi Room, it started out as Nate’s Delicatessen.
We’re not sure when it morphed into Mister Corned Beef but the owner Nate – we can’t find his surname yet – was obviously quite a character.
He put snappy logos on the front cover – It’s A Date With Nate and Famous From Host to Host – and on the back of the menu, it said ‘we pledge allegiance to the fact … that when better food can be served, we will serve it.’ Possibly a reference to post WW2 food rationing that ultimately ended in 1954.
The deli served sandwiches named after cocktails such as the Teeny Weeny and the Screwdriver and served other standard deli dishes.
We found an old advert from 1978, offering a nine-course dinner – yes, nine courses – for $4.95.
Mister Corned Beef was located at 283 North Palm Canyon Drive. The deli was sold off in the late 70s or early 80s and Nate’s successor didn’t reach the same heights of popularity with locals and visitors.
It was sold to make room for the Hyatt hotel that was built in 1986.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
