Morton's Surf Club, Chicago 1960s
Product Description
In the 1950s, the surfing community on Lake Michigan would have been much smaller than today – the season lasts from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Those who did brave the waves, and those who preferred to just enjoy the scenic views of the lake - probably ended up at Morton’s Surf Club.
Billed as ‘Chicago’s most fabulous restaurant,’ it was located on Outer Drive and 56th Street and certainly seemed like a groovy place to be.
Beach chairs were available for guests, the patio was used for art fairs, garden parties and fashion shows and meals were available from morning till as late as 3am. There was also a Casino Bar.
The menu was classic mid-century design featuring items such as the ‘Mortini- the martini that has no rival’ for 65c.
It was also suggested that customers ordering the aged 18oz prime sirloin steak should not ask for it to be well-done, as the kitchen could not be responsible for the result.
This establishment should not be confused with the current Morton’s Steak House chain of restaurants, established in Chicago in 1978 by two entrepreneurs who worked at the Playboy Club in Montreal, Quebec. Morton’s has grown to over 65 restaurants in the US and abroad.
We believe Morton’s Surf Club was replaced by the Palm Grove Inn but both establishments are long gone, and offices are in their place.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
All printed in USA.
