MGM Studios Menu, Culver City 1958
Product Description
In its heyday, MGM was the largest and most glamorous film studio in Hollywood - except it wasn’t actually located in Hollywood but a few miles down the road in humble Culver City. Founded in 1924, with a roaring lion as its symbol, Metro Goldwyn Mayer had a stable of big stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, James Stewart and Gene Kelly. Between 1937 and 1957, it also had an in-house animation studio which produced many loveable cartoon characters - portrayed on the interior menu - such as Barney Bear, Droopy and Tom &Jerry. The Commissary catered for the hundreds of people who worked on the massive studio lot and in this 1958 menu some of the dishes were named after weight-conscious MGM stars. There are salads for actress Elizabeth Taylor and dancer Cyd Charisse and the Parsonette salad refers to the notorious gossip columnist Louella Parsons who could make or break careers.
