According to folklore, the Manhattan cocktail was invented in the Manhattan Club in New York City in 1874 at the request of the beautiful and spirited socialite Jenny Jerome, who later married a British aristocrat and became the mother of the great wartime (WWII) British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This wonderful anthropomorphic image of a flirty Manhattan lady with her little top hat and bow tie celebrates this combination of whiskey, vermouth, bitters and an optional cherry which has been a popular drink ever since its invention. In 2018 Drinks International named the Manhattan the seventh best-selling cocktail in the world - not bad for a libation that’s been around for nearly 150 years. And, of course, we think this image also celebrates Manhattan itself, a drinking town that knows how to have fun.
The date of this image is probably from the 1930s and is taken from a Leacock cocktail napkin. We’re try to find more information about it and will update when we do.
