This delightfully detailed illustration is one of a series created in 1947 by the French artist Jean Droit (1884-1961) and later used as a menu cover for the highly regarded restaurant called Le Canterbury in Brussels, Belgium.

A painter and illustrator, Droit was best known for his poster designed for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris that showed a group of athletes saluting, palm leaves as a symbol of victory and Paris’s coat of arms in the foreground, with the French flag floating behind.

Among his other commercial creations were two posters for Britain's London North East Railway LNER, each depicting gleeful and rosy-cheeked vacationers. His original works are still sought after today on the worldwide auction market.

Le Canterbury was founded in 1993 and is located at Ixelles ponds, a pleasant lake enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The neighborhood has mansions of varying styles; Art Nouveau and Art Deco, neo-classical, Flemish Renaissance and Gothic.

Brussels, rich in history, architecture and culture, is also renowned for its gastronomy and Le Canterbury continues today to offer lucky guests its gastronomic specialties such as Alsatian-style sauerkraut (in season) and Filet Americain, invented in 1926 by Joseph Niels, a style of steak tartare.
