John’s Cafe was in The Edgewater Building (which still stands) in the picturesque town of Avalon on Catalina Island, located off the coast of southern California.
This is one of a series of menu illustrations created by the visionary graphic designers Dorothy and Otis ‘Shep’ Shepard. From 1934 to 1938, the talented couple designed every element of the nascent vacation paradise including signage, typography and menus to give Catalina a cohesive image.
Today, the Santa Catalina Island Company is owned by descendants of William Wrigley Jr., who carry on his vision for building and maintaining a world class island resort.
