Born in France in 1869, Georges Redon was a painter, draftsman, caricaturist, poster artist, engraver and lithographer. Among his works were menu covers for some of France’s most famous restaurants, such as this 1924 one for the Café De Paris at the Hotel Armenonville in Nice.

Redon was particularly well-known for the portraits of children and this vintage menu art shows two children – perhaps a brother and sister – enjoying freshly picked cherries. The phrase ‘plein la lampe’ means to have your fill. There’s also a charming little dog, looking for leftovers among the cherry stalks and pits.

Redon was a prolific commercial artist and opened his own lithographic studio in Paris in 1897. He also created menu covers for the famous Fouquet’s and Le Pre Catalan restaurants. He died in 1943.
