Grosvenor House London, Boxing Day 1935
Product Description
Situated in Mayfair and overlooking Hyde Park, the Grosvenor House hotel was and is one of London’s most luxurious hotels.
Originally opened in 1929 on the site of the home of the Duke of Westminster (whose family name is Grosvenor), Grosvenor House was the first hotel in London to have private entrance halls for every room, as well as the first to provide in-room chilled water. Such luxuries!
During the Second World War the hotel’s Great Room was used as the Officers’ Sunday Club, and then as a mess for US officers, to which Generals Eisenhower and Patton were regular visitors
In the 1950s the Grosvenor House was able to expand, following the death of the owner of 35 Park Lane, Bruno, Baron Schroeder. Nowadays the hotel on London’s famous Park Lane is known as the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London.
This lovely 1935 menu shows a fantasy scene of people celebrating Boxing Day – the British term for December 26 - in a festively decorated village.
The artist’s name is Gil but there are several artists called Gil and so far, we’ve been unable to narrow this down to anyone in particular.
The food offering is in French, the fashion at the time for upmarket restaurants.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
All printed in USA.
