Fonda Santa Anita, a legendary, long-running restaurant on Avenida Juárez in Mexico City, featured fabulous menu covers with illustrations by local artists. The walls inside were decorated with paintings of saints, indigenous people and birds.

It’s generally thought that Fonda Santa Anita opened in the 1950s but this vibrant and colorful menu cover is dated Tuesday 17th August 1948 (Martes 17 Agosto 48) and could have been from its opening year.

The restaurant took part in the 1967 New York’s World Fair and for decades was a popular spot for locals and must-visit for tourists who arrived in Mexico City.

Tables were covered in white tablecloths and there was a piano for entertainment. There was an extensive food offering and prices were in Mexican pesos.

Fonda Santa Anita closed in 2016 for undisclosed reasons, but this wonderful menu image remains as a reminder of an inexpensive and authentic fonda (family-run place) that typified the vibrant soul of Mexico City.
