East African Airways was an airline jointly run by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Set up in 1946, the corporation was dissolved in 1977 amid worsening relations between the three countries.
This vibrant menu cover from the defunct airline, showing a traditional shield and drinking vessel, was from a flight that set off from Nairobi in Kenya, stopped in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and ended in Blantyre, the commercial and financial capital of Malawi in southeastern Africa.
The image also plays tribute to the herds of giraffes, elephants, zebras, Cape buffalo, rhinos and other animals which roam across East Africa’s vast savannahs or are protected in wildlife reserves.
Eastern Africa is home to the continent's highest peaks, dominated by the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the tallest mountain in Africa and the world's tallest freestanding mountain (19,341 ft). We think this is the one featured in this menu cover.
Other giants include Kenya's highest peak, Mount Kenya (17,057 ft) and the glacial Rwenzori Mountains (16,762 feet) on the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border.
East African Airways used a wide variety of aircraft throughout its history, most notably the Vickers VC10, Douglas DC-9, and de Havilland Comet 4.
