Déjeuner, Château de Francs, Bègles, France 1890
Product Description
This beautiful 19th century French menu shows a gentleman returning from a morning livestock market. In the front basket of the carriage are two geese and a cockerel. A fat pig brings up the rear and is being pulled along by his new owner.
This 1890 lunch menu offered a substantial feast. Among the dishes – steak with anchovy butter, roast ham in jelly, game pate in pastry, roast chickens, eel tartare and truffled guinea fowl. No wonder dessert was simple - a sweet eggy brioche with coffee.
The rather grand lunch was held at the historic Château de Francs, in Bègles just outside of Bordeaux. it is beautifully evocative of the fine art of French dining and the era.
