Chi Chi, Palm Springs 1947
Product Description
The original Chi Chi opened in Palm Springs in 1941 and eventually had locations in Hollywood, Riverside, Long Beach, Belmont Shore, Catalina Island San Diego, San Francisco and even one in Salt Lake City.
A tropical-themed supper club, Chi Chi was a popular destination for Hollywood stars and executives.
The ‘Chi Chi Girl’ on the cover of the menu was from a painting by Edward Leeteg. “I did not give Chi Chi permission to use my Hina Rapa to reproduce in any way,” wrote Leeteg to his friend Barney Davis. “The least they could do would be to give me a credit line, but that is asking too much to expect from a Hollywood gin joint.”
The ‘Chi Chi Girl’ was a recurring theme throughout the restaurants, and she was used extensively in advertising and promotional materials. Leeteg was never paid for the use.
