Sweep away your hungry feelings, says this menu from the appropriately named Carl Broome’s restaurant in Seattle in 1938. The broom on the menu cover is die-cut and attached with staples.

What we love about this menu is the wholesome presentation and the effort the owner made to welcome customers and tell them about the food.

There’s a special spot introducing the Salmon-Derby-Burger. ‘Canned salmon, a most important crop in the Puget Sound area, is meeting worldwide acclaim for its nutritional qualities and delicate flavors. Salmonburgers are NEW! They are good…appropriately garnished and satisfying,’ says the menu.

There’s also a mention of the salmonburger featuring in the ‘Fishermen’s Frolic’ celebrations sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce on September 10, 1938.

Broome’s name is spelled out on the bottom of the interior menu and ends with the proprietor’s words to a customer: ‘Each time you come in… it makes us AWFUL happy.’

There’s also a word from Mr Broome on the back of the menu about how he enjoys the restaurant business and is happy when his customers come in and are satisfied with the tasty food.

In 1938, Mr Broome went into local politics and ran for State Senate.
