Product Description

This stylish wine list cover is an example of brutalist art featuring simple geometric forms, a deliberate rejection of ornamentation and a limited color palette. It shows two people standing at the bar and putting away their drinks in a very efficient manner.

Brutalist art first came to the US during the New Deal in the 1930s. This was a series of programs enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt between 1933 and 1939 to combat the Great Depression.

It provided federally funded jobs for millions of unemployed Americans, including projects for thousands of artists. Asked why the government should provide jobs for unemployed artists, New Deal administrator Harry Hopkins replied, ‘Hell, they've got to eat just like other people.’

Brookhaven bar was located in the picturesque hamlet of Wingdale in New York State and we think this menu is later than the New Deal era and from the 1940s or the early 1950s.

The cocktails list mentions a Scarlett O Hara, named after the heroine in the multi-Oscar winning film Gone with the Wind, released in 1939.

Under Fancy Mixed Drinks, there’s the famous Zombie cocktail for one dollar, invented in 1934 by Donn Beach at his Don the Beachcomber restaurant in Hollywood, California.

The story goes that the iconic cocktail made of fruit juices and three types of rum was mixed by Beach for a customer who complained of a hangover before an important business meeting.

When the customer returned a few days later, he complained that the remedy hadn’t worked because it had made him feel ‘like a zombie.’  The founding father of tiki culture was highly amused and put it on his drinks menu, limiting it to two per customer because of its alcoholic potency.
