Established by Italian immigrant Nunzio Alioto in 1925, Alioto’s was an iconic seafood restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
Starting out as a humble, standalone fish stand selling lunch to other Italian-born fishermen and laborers, it eventually moved into Stall No 8 at Fisherman’s Wharf,
As business flourished, the Sicilian-born Alioto and his family combined the fish stand with a seafood bar, selling shrimp, crab cocktails and Dungeness crab. Alioto’s became the first building on the Wharf.
After Alioto’s death in 1933, his wife Rose expanded the restaurant. Offering sweeping views of the historic Fisherman's Wharf inner lagoon, the fishing fleet, and the bustling San Francisco Bay, diners flocked to the establishment for the views and for its Sicilian-influenced seafood and pasta dishes, made using Alioto family recipes.
The beloved establishment survived a fire in 1957 and continued to attract generations of San Franciscans and tourists for decades. However, it closed in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and did not re-open. Its permanent closure was announced in 2022.
In 2025, crews demolished the landmark three-story restaurant as part of work on a new $10m public plaza. Alioto’s famous green fish sign is being kept in storage in the meantime.
