This eye-catching menu cover for the Detroit restaurant The Steak Knife is a classic example of mid-century design.

A good knife is a vital implement in any steakhouse, of course. No-one wants to saw their way through a premium steak. A serrated edge tears the fibers of the meat but a sharp, straight blade glides through effortlessly, preserving the juices and texture.

From the blades featured on this front cover, it looks like the Steak Knife had knives that would deliver a clean, pristine cut.

The mid-century design aesthetic is continued on the interior menu showing vignettes of the food offer from the restaurant that had a ‘blazing open charcoal hearth.’

Detroit is a city that has long loved its steaks.

Carl's Chop House was a landmark Detroit restaurant established in 1923 and operated for nearly 90 years before permanently closing in 2010.

The London Chop House was founded in 1938. It closed in 1991 before being re-opened in 2012 by the Gatzaros family who restored it to its former glory. It still flourishes in the Motor City today, along with many new steakhouses.

We’re not sure when The Steak Knife closed.
