The Ould Cod was an intimate basement restaurant and late-night spot in Dublin, Ireland, opened in the 1960s by novelist and proprietor Eric Burdick along with his business partner Frank Robinson.

Ould is the phonetic spelling of old and would have been widely used in Dublin and pronounced like bald or scald.

Known for its simple, well-cooked food and nightclub-style atmosphere, the Ould Cod served as a creative and social hub for Dublin’s literary world.

Canadian-born Burdick, who spent decades living in Ireland and the UK, used the venue for literary events, such as hosting the launch reception for his 1969 novel Old Rag Bone, a memoir-style novel that captured the gritty, heartfelt experiences of working-class life.

His first published book was I’m Coming, Virginia, a thriller published in 1962 and based on Burdick’s own experiences in London that included a spell in prison for stealing a car when he was drunk. He also published the satire I’m A Complete Alcoholic in 1975.

Burdick was married to the pioneering American journalist and author Ruth Langdon Inglis.

A kind of supper club, the Ould Cod was located at 1 Lincoln Place in Dublin and served hearty food and a champagne cocktail for five shillings (in old money) and a martini for two shillings.

It was open from 6pm to 12.30 and was advertised as being a place for ‘wining, dining, dancing and singing.’

This die-cut 1965 menu, held together with red ribbons, has a lovely image of an Ould Cod by the Irish artist Eric Patton (1925-2004) who worked in oil and watercolor and was a printmaker. His many paintings of Dublin have been sold worldwide.
