The Clock Broiler created ‘Chubby the Champ’ as its mascot burger in 1941 at its Lynwood location. Car hops dressed in satin marching band uniforms took orders and delivered food to vehicles - it must have been quite the service.

The Chubby was a hefty fellow with two beef patties and a slice of bun in the middle. Though he had a friendly smile, he also wore boxing gloves to show that this snack packed a punch.

By the 1950s, the popular drive-in with its geometric Googie-style architecture had expanded to more than a dozen locations including Van Nuys, Culver City, San Fernando, North Hollywood, Bellflower, Alhambra, Maywood, Huntington Park, Temple City and South Pasadena.

We believe this chain went out of business in the 1960s, probably because of increasing competition from other hamburger chains.
