With a legendary history that includes five Super Bowl Champion teams and many Hall of Fame players, Candlestick Park was home to some of the greatest teams in NFL history.
It was originally the home of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants who played there from 1960 till 1999, after which the Giants moved into Pacific Bell Park (now named Oracle Park) in 2000.
It was also the home field of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League from 1971 to 2013, after which the team moved to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
This colorful and strikingly designed 1970s menu cover was for the Stadium Club, a premier venue within the historic San Francisco stadium, offering members, season ticket holders and guests an upscale dining experience with views of the field.
Hearty food was on offer, but the main attraction was that the Club offered respite from the notoriously cold and windy conditions of ‘the Stick’, located near the San Francisco Bay.
Talk of building a stadium in the Bay Area began in 1954 and the site at Candlestick Point – named for the ‘candlestick birds’ or long-haired curlews that populated the area – was chosen because it was one of the few pieces of land available at the time for a stadium.
Construction began in 1958 and the stadium was inaugurated in 1960, soon gaining the unwelcome reputation of being the coldest venue in Major League Baseball because of the winds blowing off the Pacific Ocean. The swirling winds and the cold and damp made things difficult for players and fans alike. The stadium was enclosed in the 1970s, partly because of this problem.
On September 30, 1999, the San Francisco Giants played their final game at Candlestick Park with Juan Marichal throwing the ceremonial first pitch and 61,389 fans packing the stadium. The Giants lost to the Dodgers 9 to 4 and afterwards the home plate was transported to what was then Pacific Bell Park and still under construction.
Candlestick Park officially closed in August 2014, with its final event being a Paul McCartney concert (The Beatles had played their last public concert there in 1966) following the 49ers' last game there on December 23, 2013. The stadium was demolished in 2015
