A former historic waterfront mansion, the Orleans Inn has had many owners since it was built in 1875 for sea captain Aaron Snow on beautiful Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
In the 1920s, it became a brothel, patronized by bootleggers. A secret room hidden behind a wall panel in the lobby is apparently a vestige of that era.
In the 1940s, the inn was extensively renovated and operated as a grand hotel for several decades.
This lovely menu cover, with all the hallmarks of mid-century design, was from the 1950s.
The inn gradually fell into disrepair and foreclosure but was rescued by Ed and Laurie Maas and their family in the mid-1990s. The Maas family refurbished the property and runs the iconic and popular hotel, now called Orleans Waterfront Hotel, to this day.
One of the hotel’s claims to fame is that it is haunted. One of the ghosts is said to be a woman called Hannah who was murdered there in the 1920s during its time as a house of ill-repute. The specters of two men who worked as bartenders at the inn are also said to roam the property.
As its haunted reputation has spread, the inn has played host to spiritual mediums, ghost-hunting authors and general ghost enthusiasts. Not surprisingly, the inn is said to be particularly popular in the run-up to Halloween.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
