Located directly on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, the El Tovar hotel first opened its doors in 1905. It was owned by the Fred Harvey Company and cost $250,000 to build – a considerable sum at the time.

The 78-room hotel is now owned by the US government as part of Grand Canyon National Park and managed by Zanterra Parks and Resorts.  In 1987 it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

The artwork from this 1970 menu depicts two fighting cowboys and was by William Dean Fausett (1913-1998) for his series of lithographs that showed ‘stages of intoxication.’

During a career last nearly seven decades, Fausett taught painting and drawing to under-privileged children and is recognized today for his paintings of the American West.  He also painted portraits of United States Presidents Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan.

He received numerous awards including the Carnegie International Prize. His works are displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art and the New York City Museum of Fine Art.
