Decorative murals were a tradition in many hotels and restaurants and perhaps none are as whimsical and charming as the seven created by the noted artist Jo Mora for The Fable restaurant at the Drake-Wiltshire Hotel in San Francisco.

Mora was commissioned by the hotel in 1936 to create anthropomorphic paintings to decorate the walls of the restaurant inside the Drake. The seven were entitled Welcome to the Fable, Celebration of Pan, Serving the Feast, Party Animals, On the Hunt, Let’s Dance and Fandango. Delightful and colorful, these images are from a 1940 souvenir menu distributed free to customers. Fresh, unfolded copies could also be requested. This menu art features On the Hunt and Let’s Dance.

Mora, who was born in Uruguay in 1876 and who moved to the United States when he was a child, had an enormous artistic range. He was an illustrator, cartoonist and sculptor.

He died in 1947 in Monterey, California. He was 70 but left behind these and many other marvelous images.
