Nightlife in the late 1950s in the coastal city of Fort Lauderdale in South Florida sounds like it was a lot of fun.
Cool cats – the slang term for men commonly associated with jazz music – were urged to grab their kittens and come on down to The Cat’s Meow to ‘make the scene.’
The colorful menu cover shows a nattily dressed cat and his partner ready for a purrrrfect evening.
On the interior menu, the host (called Felix, of course) casts a languid eye over the proceedings and also seems to be chatting up a glamorous puss as she drinks a cocktail.
This Cat’s Meow went out of business in the 1970s and was replaced by another that became a private members club and offered risqué entertainment. Police raided the place several times and it eventually closed in the 1980s.
