Vulcania was an ocean liner built for the Italian owned Cosulich Line and voyaged between Trieste, Venice, Patras, Naples, Palermo, Barcelona, Gibraltar, Lisbon, Halifax and New York.
Launched in 1926, she was the height of luxury and she and her sister ship Saturnia were among the first liners to offer cabins with private balconies, something that is standard today.
She was requisitioned by the Italian and German governments during WWII. In October 1945 she became a United States troopship, repatriating American troops from Naples to New York. After that, she returned to commercial service.
This menu cover is one of a series of lovely watercolors of destinations on Vulcania’s trip along the Riviera Ligure (Italian Riviera) in 1954.
The Riviera Ligure is the crescent-shaped coastline of the Liguria region in northwestern Italy, stretching from the French border to Tuscany.
World-renowned for its dramatic cliffs, pastel-colored fishing villages and pristine beaches, these destinations must have been wonderful to view from Vulcania’s decks and even more wonderful to explore in the days before mass tourism.
Vulcania was sold to another shipping company in 1965, hit a rock off Cannes, France, in 1972 and was scrapped the following year.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
