This handsome couple in evening wear adorned the front cover of a 1937 menu for the Rosslyn Coffee Shop and Fountain in downtown Los Angeles.
We presume this establishment was connected to the Rosslyn Hotel, built in 1914. Its annex across the road – also in Beau Arts style – was built in 1923.
At the time, it was the largest hotel on the Pacific Coast, with 1,100 rooms and 800 baths between the two structures, according to the Los Angeles Conservancy.
No doubt a hotel of that size needed a good coffee shop and the Rosslyn certainly catered for every taste.
The massive menu offered two types of evening dinner for 45c and 55c.
There was a Continental Evening Dinner with prices ranging from 64c to $1 per person, depending on the price of the entrée, and a Grill selection. The menu also featured Electric Toasted Sandwiches – obviously an exciting culinary innovation at the time.
Both hotels were owned by brothers George Hart (1869-1929) and Dwight Hart (1874-1942) and their name was represented by mammoth heart-shaped signs on the roofs.
The 264-unit Hotel Rosslyn annex was renovated in 2015 to house a mix of homeless veteran, low-income and market-rate tenants.
Each order includes a print of the interior menu.
