King Neptune looks a very mellow chap, with the waves happily lapping about his feet as he plays a saxophone. The Franconia was built for Cunard in the 1920s and sailed around the world and on the transatlantic route. Its accommodation was said to be top class – the first class smoking room was a replica of an English inn, complete with a working fireplace. Nightly entertainment was an important feature of any cruise, of course, and this dinner menu from 1934 shows the crew must have put on quite a show for guests.
