In 1956, Paramount Pictures was finishing off the filming of Cecil B. DeMille’s epic biblical movie The Ten Commandments, starring Charlton Heston (1923-2008).
As a nod to the actor’s fame and the movie, he was among the celebrities given their own dish on the studio’s Café Continental menu that year. Strawberries Heston, for a mere 75c, was a bowl of fresh strawberries with sour cream, honey and cinnamon.
Actress and singer Dorothy Lamour, actor and comedian Bob Hope and actor and dancer Danny Kaye were other Paramount stars whose names were attached to their favorite dishes in this menu that was supposed to give the studio’s actors, directors and crews a laugh.
The suave and velvet-voiced singer Dean Martin and slapstick comedian Jerry Lewis formed an unlikely but highly successful comedy duo and this is also noted, with the pair’s Special High Calorie Diet at a joke price of $64,000.
Their meal of Egg Foo Fish and Almond Crisp Plateau Salmon with Egg Shell was to be eaten in the isolation booth only, the menu warned.
Dean Martin ended his partnership with Lewis on July 25,1956 and the blockbuster The Ten Commandments was released on November 8 and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
Other cinematic achievements that year were Paramount’s release of Alfred Hitchock’s thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much and a version of War and Peace, starring Audrey Hepburn.
A young Elvis Presley, who had already released hits like Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t Be Cruel and Hound Dog and become a television sensation, signed a three-movie contract with Paramount in 1956. His first film Loving You was released the following year.
