Fong Wan, a famous Chinese herbalist in San Francisco, opened three spots in 1940s San Francisco and Oakland: New Shanghai Terrace Bowl, Nanking Café, and Club Shanghai. Wan called his shows "the Chinese 'Folies-Bergere' of the Americas" and claimed that he spent more than two thousand dollars a week on the entertainment alone.
