This humorous vintage menu illustration showing a Saguaro cactus swaying to the catchy music of marimba dates from 1930s San Francisco. It came from La Marimba Club, a restaurant and nightclub that featured Latin-American floor shows. The entertainment was provided by the Hurtado Brothers, who called themselves the Kings of Rhythm, Led by Guatemalan-born Celso Hurtado, this mini orchestra played their percussive instruments to great acclaim, securing a recording contract and encouraging nightclub goers – and cactuses – to get on the dance floor.
